Collier County History 

·        2,598,000 sticks of dynamite were used to build the Tamiami Trail.

·        Total length is 273 miles

·        The project took 13 years to complete with the official opening April 26, 1928.

·        Born: 1873     Death: 1939

·        Barron Gift Collier, left school at the age of 16.

·        Founder of New York Subways Advertising Company.

·        Served as a Boy Scout leader for the Greater New York and was the director of Boy Scouts of America.

·        In 1911, on vacation, he bought Useppa Inn from his friend John M. Roach for $100,000 on his initial visit to Florida.

·        Purchased Deep Lake Grove and Deep Lake-to-Everglades Railroad in 1921.

·        In 1922 he purchased 600,000 acres in what was later to become Collier County.

·        By 1928 he owned over 1 million acres.

·         Acquired ownership of the Ft. Myers Press and later merged it with the Tropical News, forming the Ft. Myers News Press

·        Florida is said to be the birthplace of cattle raising in the territory of the U.S.

·        The term “cracker” came from the sound of the long leather whips Florida cowmen used to urge the cattle along.

·        Before the Civil War the cattle trade flourished between Florida and Cube.  Florida was the principal source of beef for the Confederate armies.

·        Ranching is one of Collier County’s oldest industries.

·        In 1956 the Collier County Cattleman’s Association was established.

·        Today there are approximately 50 commercial farms in Collier Co. with a total of approximately 25, 000 head of cattle.
